Honolulu HK Café at Robinsons Manila

We now go to Circuit Makati more frequently because it’s barely a five-minute drive from where we live. We still go to Robinsons Manila once a month when we do grocery shopping, and I still get surprised each time I see a new restaurant sprouting like a mushroom. Gone are the days when we get tired of eating at the same restaurant over and over again! One of the places that we recently tried was Honolulu HK CafĂ©.

We tried Honolulu HK CafĂ© a couple of months ago when they were still at their soft opening. Mama and Papa were already having lunch at that time so we decided to join them. We were due for our monthly grocery shopping last Saturday so we braved the rains and drove to Robinsons Manila after Zayne’s class. The food at Honolulu HK CafĂ© made an impression on our first visit so we decided to give it another try.

Zayne, our three-year-old foodie and pancit monster, requested for errrr… pancit! She was pointing at the Stir Fried Hong Kong Style Noodle with Pork Chop in XO Sauce on the menu, but the waiter said that the XO sauce is a bit spicy. We settled with Hong Kong Style Dried Noodle with Pork Chop in Spring Onion Sauce instead. Ang haba ng name! Wahaha!

The noodles itself were cooked to perfection with the sauce coating every strand. Though the sauce is both briny and sweet at the same time, I liked that the flavors were not overpowering. The pork chop on top was not only tasty, it was also very tender! I don’t usually cook pork chop at home because it has the tendency to get chewy when overcooked. That’s why I was so delighted when I first bit into the meat. It somehow reminded me of the pork chop on the fried rice of Din Tai Fung.

The plate was served with just a piece of broccoli which Zayne happily devoured. I just wish there were more pieces, but we still enjoyed this dish up until the last bite. It’s actually a good addition to my list of comfort food!

We had their Yang Chow Fried Rice on both of our visits. The serving is actually good for 2 people. But because we had noodles, we ended up taking home some leftovers.

The vibrant colors of the rice and the different ingredients were so inviting. I liked that the rice is not oily and salty. It also has quite a generous serving of the meat and shrimps. I think there were around 3 to 4 pieces of the large shrimps which is totally not bad for its price.

We thought of pairing the Yang Chow Fried Rice with Deep Fried Spareribs with Salt and Pepper. I wanted to have a spicy version of the spareribs, but we had to consider Zayne.

This dish is actually good. The meat is tender, but be prepared to get your hands dirty and throw away your poise when you order this dish. Kakamayin mo talaga with matching ngasab! Wahahaha!!! We just find it weird that it was not served with vinegar on the side. We even asked one of the servers who confirmed it and just gave us black vinegar instead.

During our first visit, Zayne specifically asked for chicken so we tried their Soy Chicken. Pikit-mata namin siyang inorder kahit PHP450 siya! Pero sobrang sulit naman pala! I was initially very worried when I first saw the chicken. Its dark brown color and the sauce surrounding it made me think that it might be too salty, but I was wrong!

The chicken is very tender. It tastes “light”, but my palates were still thrilled at each bite. The Soy Chicken was already good on its own, but the mixture of the chili and ginger on the side gave this dish an extra kick. We ended up not minding the price tag of this dish because we got to eat the leftovers for dinner!

Mama and Papa were already in the middle of having their lunch when we joined them during our first visit. They tried the Curry Fish Ball, and I was lucky to have eaten the last of the ten pieces which explains the photo below! Hahahaha!

Curry Fish Ball (10pcs) PHP198

I know that you probably think that this is overpriced for PHP198, but it’s very different from the tusok-tusok fish balls we grew up with. For starters, their fish balls do not shrink. Haha! Mej hawig sa squid balls ‘yung laki niya. And the sauce! Homaygad!!! I didn’t think that fish balls would go well with curry! It is so tangy that I literally had to close my eyes when I ate the last piece! :p

If I’m not mistaken, this falls under the SNACK category on their menu. Pero ang sarap niyang ulamin! Pwamissss!!!

Honolulu HK CafĂ© also serves milk tea and different kinds of bread. I saw a lot of customers just dropping by to buy their egg tarts. I’ll probably try it next time!

Papa said that their serving is small, but I believe it’s acceptable considering that most of their dishes are on the PHP200 mark. It makes us enjoy a little bit of everything instead of ending up stuffed and stuck with only a few dishes. :)
