Pizza has always been my comfort food. I didn’t have the slightest fondness with burgers while I was growing up. I am not sure if it is because the only burgers I grew up with are those from fast food restaurants with patties that taste like papers. But staying in the US for three months actually sparked my love affair with big, fat, juicy burgers. Half of the weight I gained from my onshore assignment was probably from all the burgers I consumed!
I am just glad that the burger chains here in the Philippines are growing little by little. When Big Better Burgers opened its Jupiter branch, I started bugging my husband because I really wanted to try it out especially after reading Joie’s blog entry about it. To make the long story short, we were finally able to pay it a visit one Friday night. A quiet burger night with my husband was such a treat after a very hectic work week.
This particular BBB branch is a bit small. But the restaurant extends outside. Before I tell you about their burgers, let me tell you a couple of things that I like about BBB. They only have a common restroom. But it is very clean and well-maintained. It smells really good. I even noticed that the liquid soap and lotion inside smell good too! It is well-lighted and surrounded by mirrors. Girls will definitely love it! Second, even if there was only one guy manning the restaurant, service is fast. He was also very accommodating when out of curiosity, I asked him where their kitchen is. Since the restaurant is small, I wondered where they prepare their burgers. According to him, the kitchen is downstairs. Maybe that explains why he was always talking to someone on the telephone. Nyaha! Sorry, na-amaze lang kasi talaga ako! Now, let’s talk about the burgers!
Boyet decided to have the BBB Value Meal. For PHP140, it already includes a quarter-pounder burger, fries and iced tea. Being the intrusive wife that I am (haha), I decided to check out his burger. It only has the burger patty (well, of course), lettuce, tomatoes and mayonnaise. I told him that his burger is just like him – BORING! Hahaha!
I hate being wrong, but I was in this case. It may look boring, but it definitely isn’t! The patty is oozing with juices even if it is well-done. And that simple mayonnaise was deceiving! I don’t know what they mixed with it. But whatever it is, it is really good. The fries were a bit small in portion. But we both liked it. It’s thickly-cut, perfectly salted and not oily.
On the other hand, I decided to have their Bacon Barbecue Burger – 1/3 pound burger patty, bacon, onions and barbecue sauce. Yes! You read it right! My husband’s burger patty was 1/4 pound and mine was 1/3 pound. Now, who’s the boss?! :p
Just like Boyet’s, my burger patty was perfectly-grilled. I like that though it’s juicy, the burger perfectly fits my hands so it’s not messy to eat. The bacon was really crispy which added crunch and a bit of saltiness to my burger. I also love the tanginess brought by the white onions. I love white onions! Good thing that my husband still loves me even after eating tons of it. The sweetness of the barbecue sauce sparked the party of flavors in my taste buds.
Boyet and I both agreed that the bun they use is delicious. It’s actually not the usual hamburger bun because its texture and taste are similar with our traditional pandesal. We love that the bread is not too thick so we could taste the goodness of the burgers even more. Big Better Burgers serves really good and affordable burgers. We are definitely coming back!
