I’ve been eyeing the Robinson’s Place Ermita branch of Ya Kun Kaya Toast for months. It is situated beside the supermarket nearing the exit which made me think whether it’s a good or bad spot. We finally tried it last Sunday when we arrived past 10 a.m. after hearing mass and while waiting for the first screening of Invictus.
I was really sleepy so I desperately needed some caffeine. I had to ask one of the waiting staff the difference among their coffees. When I asked her what she’d recommend, she said that coffee with condensed milk is their bestseller. It was a nice balance between the bitterness of the coffee and the sweetness of the condensed milk. It was surely a nice way to wake up my sleeping nerves.
After a few seconds of studying the menu, Boyet immediately ordered for hot chocolate. I reminded him of his diet but he did get it anyway. That guy has no self-control!
I think he felt a little guilty so he ordered for only half a set of Butter Sugar Toast. Half set includes 1 slice of toast, 1 soft-boiled egg and your choice of coffee or tea. Additional Php10 if you want to change it to hot chocolate. Their Butter Sugar Toast reminded me of how my mom used to put Dairy Cream with sugar on pandesal and heat it over a pan. Of course, this one is better.
My choice was the Cheezy French Toast w/ Kaya. The appetizing smell of the toast compliments the cloud-like texture of the bread. It was a nice fusion of flavors of the kaya (coconut jam) and cheese.
My set meal has two soft-boiled eggs. I once tried making soft-boiled eggs at home but I couldn’t get the desired consistency so I ended up frying them. They serve you with soy sauce, salt and pepper which you can add if desired.
I usually put salt and pepper in eggs so I wondered how it would taste with soy sauce. Surprisingly, I liked it. I dipped my toast in my egg-soy-sauce-pepper mixture. Then I slurped it. Whichever way still made my morning complete.
