Restaurant Review: Shabu Shabu Ichiban at Circuit Makati

I chose to celebrate my 33rd birthday with my family at Shabu Shabu Ichiban. It is one of the many restaurants in Circuit Makati, making the place the newest foodie’s haven.

Shabu Shabu Ichiban is a hotpot restaurant that offers various set meals. The minimalist interiors of the restaurant made it look even more spacious. Because we’re a party of 7 (Zayne already eats like a “normal” paying adult haha), they placed us in the area of the restaurant for big groups. We were asked to remove our footwear so parang very Japanese ang peg. Hihi.

The edamame is sooooo addicting! I was eating it before, during and after dinner! Hahaha!

The waitress initially handed us a piece of paper wherein we wrote how many pieces of sushi and sashimi we wanted to be served. A lot of things were happening in our table. Plates after plates kept on being served so I did not really get the chance to take photos of everything. It also didn’t help that my toddler kept on pulling my arms. Haha. Anyway, I only got to take a photo of our first plate of sashimi. I already forgot how many servings we had that night. I also took a photo of the rice rolls, but it was so blurred! (Blame Zayne, blame Zayne! :p)

Grabe, these chicken wings! I could not stop munching it. The skin is very crispy. The meat is tender, juicy and very flavorful. It has the perfect sweet and savory blend. I initially thought that it would be forgettable because of the amount of food that was coming in and out of our table, but I was wrong. I think we had 2 or 3 servings of these chicken wings!

The kushikatsu was also a big revelation. It looked unassuming when put side by side with the other dishes. Para lang kasing tinuhog na whatever. But, ow-em-geeehh! I think I ate 3 sticks of kushikatsu! The sauce dripped on top has a hint of sweetness which perfectly complemented the savory pork cutlets.

And of course, a trip to Shabu Shabu Ichiban is incomplete without trying their shabu shabu. Like, duh!

I love the feeling I get after eating shabu shabu, especially if they offer unlimited servings. I get full without feeling like I don’t want to eat for the next five days. Swabeng busog lang hindi bangungot-levelz kind of busog. If you’re a fan of shabu shabu, then you probably understand what I’m talking about.

Shabu Shabu Ichiban offers more than 20 types of soups for your shabu shabu. Most of us opted to have tonkotsu, while Papa and Abes had miso.

The “cast” of the shabu shabu all gave an exemplary performance! Haha! The meat, the balls, the vegetables, the broth and the sauce all played their parts in giving my 33-year-old tummy a wonderful treat! I distinctly love the balls with mozzarella cheese inside! I ended up munching them after cooking in the boiling broth!

Our set meal also comes with an unlimited serving of ice cream. I wasn’t expecting too much from it, but it once again exceeded my expectations. If you’ve been an avid follower of this blog, then you probably know that my mother is very hard to please. But she enjoyed everything, including the ice cream! They gave us three flavors – vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. Papa, who hates strawberry ice cream, asked for another serving of it! Mama even asked one of the servers the brand of ice cream they serve. It turns out that they have a supplier for it. (Ayaw, sabihin ni Ate! Haha!)

I was initially hesitant to give Shabu Shabu Ichiban a try because of the mixed reviews. But surprisingly, we all had a great time. My parents have been bugging me to come back ever since! Ambiance was great. Food was awesome. And the servers took really good care of us. They kept on asking us for refills!

P.S. When we visited on January 2017, Shabu Shabu Ichiban only accepts cash payments. One of the servers said that credit card payments would be available by February. So just in case you plan to go, it wouldn’t hurt to check with them first. :)
