Restaurant Review: Hot Star Large Fried Chicken at 500 Shaw Zentrum

A few weeks ago, my husband and I went to Shaw. Blvd. for some mattress and couch-shopping at Mandaue Foam. Although we went home empty-handed, we still took advantage of that day to try out Hot Star which is just across Mandaue Foam. My younger brother suggested this to us. But when I posted a review of Kettle’s fried chicken, my virtual friend and fellow blogger, Edel, told me that I should try Hot Star in SM Manila! I haven’t been to SM Manila for ages so I am no longer familiar with the restaurants there. Dumayo pa kami sa Shaw, meron naman pala sa SM Manila! :p

We initially thought the restaurant was closed that day because there was something that was blocking the view of the entrance. I then saw a “THIS WAY” sign of the restaurant, and that is probably placed there to aid first-timers like us. The restaurant is quite big. And given its minimalist interiors, the place looked even more spacious. The counter which is probably inspired by a trailer or a food truck, the steel railings and black hanging lamps, gave the place a distinct industrial vibe.

Judging by the name of the restaurant, they certainly brag for their large fried chicken. Because my husband and I were both first-timers, we asked the cashier how large does LARGE mean. She then put her two hands apart to show us how big it is and added that each serving of chicken breast measures approximately 12 inches!

Their Original Large Fried Chicken costs PHP110. Just add PHP35 to upgrade it to a meal which includes rice and drink of your choice. The cashier was definitely telling the truth because the fried chicken that my husband had that day was humongous! I think it’s bigger than my face! Kapag may umaway sa akin, pwede kong sampalin ng fried chicken ng Hot Star! Hahaha! :p

The chicken was so big that my husband failed to finish it. It was also the same fate of the fried chickens of the couple who were seating in front of us. I saw the guy stand up to have the leftovers wrapped.

I had a few bites of the fried chicken. It’s very juicy. The crust is crispy, and the meat is very moist and tender. It’s tasty, too. My husband said that he tasted a hint of cinnamon. The savory and quite buttery gravy made the chicken even tastier.

I skipped the large fried chicken because I had something else in my mind. The moment I saw the chicken wings from their menu, I knew right away that it would be my lunch!

I was initially doubting myself whether I’d be able to finish the 4 wings. I asked my husband to help me, but he declined after seeing his gigantic fried chicken. He then told me to just eat what I can, and then we would just be bringing the leftovers home. How did my lunch end? We didn’t get to take home anything! I finished everything up to the point of licking the bones of the chicken wings!

The chicken wings come with the same gravy as the fried chicken, but it wasn’t really necessary. The wings were simply amazing without it. I love the smoky and tangy flavors of the wings. I also loved the fact that they serve “pure” chicken wings. I know that it is just a matter of preference, but I don’t really like eating chicken wings with parts of the breast attached to it. I always feel cheated when that happens. Haha! Anyway, my husband just gave me “the look” after seeing my almost wiped out plate. I just told him that the Baby Kolokoy loved the chicken wings very much! :p

  2. I prefer the crispy version of their large fried chicken. Para kasing corn chips yung lasa ng breading nun. Tapos juicy yung chicken meat. Hindi na nga ako nagra-rice kasi complete na sya for me. Ay nagmamashed potato pala ako with lotsa gravy. Hihi. :)

  6. They're not kidding when they say "large", are they? Hhahaha. How very interesting to taste chicken with cinnamon. Perhaps if we go to Manila area, we'll try this place out.
