KDrama Review: Cheongdamdong Alice

Cheongdamdong Alice was once again a recommendation by my friend, Mitch. She warned me though that this is very different from the previous KDramas that she recommended to me. According to her, although the series has some light moments, the plot is thicker and heavier.

Han Se-Gyung (Moon Geun-Young) is a very talented woman who excelled in school. But she chose to become a part of a world where poor people like her don’t stand the chance of surviving. She did the best she could to succeed, but her efforts didn’t pay off which forced her to resort to doing things that are beyond her principles. Seo Yoon-Joo (So E-Hyun) was Han Se-Gyung’s classmate. She is not as smart and as talented as Han Se-Gyung, but she was able to become a part of Cheongdamdong – a place in Korea exclusive for the elites and the rich. The two girls didn’t go along really well, but Han Se-Gyung did everything to know the secret behind the success of her nemesis. And that’s when all the deception began!

Have you experienced watching a movie feeling like you have been inside the cinema for three hours, and then you look at your watch and you realize that it has been just an hour? That was how I felt while watching this series. Every episode is filled with heavy dramatic scenes. Moon Geun-Young, who I still remember as the young Jenny from Endless Love, was probably crying 80% of the series! I was like watching The Devil Wears Prada, only a hundred times darker!

I started losing grip in the middle of the series. Some parts were too dragging. But two things helped me to hang on and finish the series. First is the love story aspect of the two main characters. It was as if I was watching a Cinderella story. But Cinderella’s secret is just not as dark as Han Se-Gyung's. And in this case, the damsel in distress is disguised as the prince! Second is the very intriguing plot. It’s not the type of drama where everything is just black or white. Everybody is switching sides every now and then. The lead characters are frenemies. The witch turns into a fairy godmother. It’s that twisted!

The story also has a lot of references to Alice in Wonderland. Unfortunately, I was so clueless because I had no idea with the story of Alice in Wonderland! (I know, right?!)

I love how this series tackles about how difficult it is for some people to succeed just because they don’t fit into the mold created by society. It also illustrates how a lot of people value money as if it is the only important thing in the world and how they throw away their principles just to succeed in life. But despite all the lies and deception, I love that this is also a story of friendship and reconciliation. I actually liked the ending of this story, the way the main characters got the kind of peace of mind that they deserved and how they realized the importance of self-worth more than wealth. Plus, I love how the kontrabidas got their taste of karma, too! Bwahaha!
