Fathers - the wind beneath our wings

I love my parents. I don’t come from a perfect family but if I get to live another life and God could let me choose my parents, I’d still choose them. They were the strictest yet they have always allowed me to spread my wings and become who I want to be.

I am close to both my parents. My mom is more reserved while my dad is always the clown in the family. That’s why my mom always says “Pinagtutulungan nyo na naman akong mag-aama”, every time we make fun of her. As a matter of fact, my dad sometimes starts the riot in the house.

I was never spoiled. I actually received a lot of spanking from my dad. When he tells me not to run and I end up crying with a wounded knee, he would still spank me. And then after that, he would get the alcohol, clean my wound and tell me that it would have not happened to me if I just obeyed him. But he never spanked me without explaining why he did it. I know that some parents would disagree with how my father disciplined me. But there is no perfect formula in parenting. Besides, I am thankful of how I turned out as a person.

My mom once asked me why I fell in love with Boyet. Her eyes goggled after hearing my answer. It's simple, he’s like Papa. And maybe that’s why my mom has learned to love Boyet after so many years of cold treatment! Haha!

My dad gives the best advice, some of which other fathers would not dare give. He openly discussed drugs, smoking, drinking and even premarital sex over dinner. Argghh!

My dad cracks the best jokes. And yes, even the dirty ones!

My dad has been pushing me to get married yet there are times that he still treats me as his little girl.

My dad always tells me that I have too many clothes. So I tell him that his shorts no longer fit in his cabinet to make him shut up.

My dad tells me to be a little daring so people will stop thinking that I am a high school student. I’ll just give him the look and he’ll shut up.

But there are times that none of us can make him shut up. There are times that the tables are turned when I become the parent and he becomes the kid. He allows me to become the parent. It only means that my opinions as the eldest in the family matters. And because of that, I learn to respect him more. I have learned that we still have boundaries that I am not allowed to cross as his child.

I don’t remember celebrating Father’s days when I was younger. I can’t even remember how the celebration was brought to our country. But no matter how or when it has begun, I am so glad that we now have it. It’s quite usual for us children to be so vocal and expressive to our mothers but most people feel more restricted when it comes to showing our love to our fathers.

Mothers are always the frontrunners. When a child succeeds, it’s always the mother who gets the praises. This Father’s Day, let’s give our dads the prestige that they deserve.

It must have been cold there in my shadow,
to never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that's your way.
You always walked a step behind.

So I was the one with all the glory,
while you were the one with all the strength.
A beautiful face without a name for so long.
A beautiful smile to hide the pain.

Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.

Did you ever know that you're my hero?
You're everything I wish I could be.
I could fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.

Did I ever tell you you're my hero?
You're everything, everything I wish I could be.
Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings.

Oh, the wind beneath my wings.
You, you, you, you are the wind beneath my wings.
Fly, fly, fly away. You let me fly so high.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.

Fly, fly, fly high against the sky,
so high I almost touch the sky.
Thank you, thank you,
thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings.
